Sharapova and Bartoli reached Stanford Quarterfinals

Maria Sharapova defeated Olga Govortsova 6-3 6-3 and Marion Bartoli made it past ana Ivanovic 6-3 6-4 to advanced to the quarter-finals of the Bank of the west Classic in Stanford.

Sharapova was always in control of the match taking advantaje of her opponent´s erratic play. The Russian served and returned well enough to control most of the points.

“I stayed aggressive and made sure to have an extra something on my ball,” said Sharapova. “I thought I had the advantage when I hit a good solid serve and then tried to take the ball and do something with it.”

“It was a sloppy first game but the rest of it was fine,” Sharapova added. “I took my chances when I could.”

Next up for Sharapova will be Elena Dementieva. Sharapova leads Dementieva in their head-to-head, 8-3.

Bartoli, the defending champion, was also able to served and returned aggressively against Ivanovic and enjoyed a nice match on her favor.

“I’m really pleased I was finally able to get past her,” said Bartoli. “I’m moving a lot better so I’m able to get the ball back with interest when she hits the ball hard. I managed to play the big points well and that’s the type of matches I need this summer.”

“I knew I had to serve very well against Ana and I did it,” Bartoli said. “The main goal tonight was to hit the ball hard. When I was retrieving and on the back foot, she was coming up with some great shots. You have to push her back.”

Ivanovic did not play her best and her serve was against her once again. She only managed to get 37% of her serves in.

“She was hitting the ball faster than I thought she would,” said Ana. “It was very hard for me to read her serve. I always felt I was a little bit too late. But I had some chances. Overall there are a lot of positive things from this match. I just have to move forward.”

Bartoli will face Victoria Azarenka, who defeated Melanie Oudin, in the quarters.
